Is Bathtub Refinishing Worth It?

Is it worth it?

Refinishing pays off when the tub is solid and the surface is the problem

A stained, dull, or rough tub makes replacement feel like the only “real” fix. But in most Chicago bathrooms a swap turns into tile damage, plumbing adjustments, days of disruption, and a bill that climbs fast. If the tub is structurally sound — especially cast iron or steel — and the issue is worn enamel, stains, scratches, chips, or rust spots, professional refinishing makes it look new again without demolition.

Yes, worth it

Refinish when

  • The tub is solid and stable — no flexing, no soft spots
  • You want a fresh, glossy surface without a full remodel
  • You need a faster, lower-cost option than replacement
Probably not

Think twice when

  • The tub flexes or has soft spots — a support problem no coating fixes
  • There are structural cracks or active leaks
  • You’re already gutting the bathroom for a full remodel
  • The metal is badly rusted or failing from underneath

Where the money goes

A new tub isn’t the expensive part — the work around it is

Replacing a bathtub commonly involves:

  • Removing or damaging tile to get the tub out
  • Plumbing work — drain, overflow, valves
  • Disposal, delivery, and hauling
  • Repairs to walls and floor after removal
  • Multiple trades over multiple days

If the bathroom isn’t being remodeled anyway, refinishing is usually the smarter move.

  • A fraction of replacement cost — see pricing
  • Tile, walls, and plumbing untouched

  • “Surprises” once demolition starts
  • Several thousand dollars depending on tile, plumbing, and labor

Lifespan

How long does refinishing last?

With professional prep, quality materials, and proper care — 7–15 years. Our work carries a 5-year warranty.

1. Preparation

Cleaning, sanding, bonding. This is where most cheap jobs fail — skipped prep peels.

2. Material and method

Not all “refinishing” is the same. A poured, self-leveling coating holds up differently from a thin sprayed layer.

When to say no

When refinishing is not worth it

Situations where we’ll usually recommend a different solution.

The tub moves or flexes

A spongy floor or cracking sounds under load point to a support or installation issue — common with low-quality acrylic and fiberglass. A new surface won’t fix movement.

Structural cracks or active leaks

If water escapes through the tub body or deep cracks keep spreading, replacement is the safer option.

You’re doing a full remodel

If tile, layout, fixtures, and the tub are all being replaced anyway, refinishing doesn’t make sense.

Severe corrosion or metal failure

Some steel tubs rust from the underside or develop serious weak spots. If the metal is failing, the surface can’t compensate.

Not sure? That’s normal — send photos and we’ll give you a straight recommendation.

Tub types

Which tubs refinish best?

Cast iron bathtub

Cast iron

Heavy, stable, built to last. When the surface wears out, refinishing keeps the tub for years more.

Steel bathtub

Steel

Refinishable when the structure is solid. Rust spots and chips are repaired during prep.

Acrylic or fiberglass bathtub

Acrylic / fiberglass

Possible in some cases — only when the tub is stable and properly supported. The enemy is flexing. More →

The process

What to expect on the day

  1. Protect surrounding areas
  2. Remove or mask hardware as needed
  3. Prep the surface — clean, decontaminate, sand, bond
  4. Repair chips and scratches if present
  5. Apply the coating with the pour-on method
  6. Cure — ready in about 24 hours

We keep the process as low-disruption as possible for occupied apartments.

The pour-on process, start to finish

Care that makes it last: non-abrasive cleaners only — no gritty powders; lift suction-cup mats between uses instead of leaving them stuck for days; don’t let bottles or soap sit in puddles; use a soft mat only if it’s approved for refinished surfaces. Simple habits make a big difference in lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

Is refinishing just “painting the tub”?

No. A professional refinishing job is mostly prep + bonding + correct application. Done right, it’s a true surface restoration — not a quick cosmetic cover-up.

Will the tub look like new?

In most cases, yes — the goal is a smooth, glossy, uniform finish that looks like a new tub.

How soon can I use the tub?

Typically about 24 hours after completion (exact timing depends on conditions and the project).

Can you fix chips and scratches too?

Yes — surface defects like chips, scratches, and small damaged areas can often be repaired as part of the refinishing process.
